A dense accelerometric network for seismic monitoring in Veneto

The Project

The Regione del Veneto entrusted OGS with the implementation of Action 5.1 of the POR-FESR 2014-2020 plan for the “Integration and development of systems for multirisk prevention also using digital networks of sensors for early rescue organization”.

The main objective is to develop a network of 300 accelerometers to measure earthquake shaking, allowing rapid damage assessment within minutes, useful to the Civil Protection. Damage assessment also requires knowledge of local amplification effects and building characteristics. These elements have been collected by the Department of Geoscience of the University of Padua.

In addition, the project aims to increase knowledge of the evolution of the seismic cycle by improving measurements of crustal deformation and studying the role of groundwater in triggering earthquakes.
